Both animes have to do with a young girl delivering peoples' souls. Both are sad, though Jigoku Shoujo is a bit darker.

Both series focuses on a seemingly harmless girl yet have deeper personalities. Additional, both anime(s) deliver the justice to accomplish one's imminent death's wishes.
Of course, that involves the theme of death and what it means to die. Although both series features the "shinigami" fulfilling wishes for opposite reasons, both anime(s) focuses on the theme of afterlife.
