Episodic animes, the protagonist is a supernatural being who goes on his/her way offering some help to different troubled people -whose identity change at each episode. This magical "help" has grave consequences in both cases...
Warau Salesman plays far more as a slightly psychological and hugely as a mean spirited black comedy, and many of the helped are adult, while in Jigoku Shoujo is a drama/tragedy (just a few black comedy in some episodes), and the majority (not all!) of their helped are teenagers/kids.
Both have some sort of "moral of the story" underlying the majority their episodic tales.
