It is a nostolgia social contemporary art depicting our industrial capitalistic societal world that we either hate or fear which is pretty relevant in our cultural norms. Both shows use unique metaphore toward our life as sonny boy was about facing responsibility like the monkey and flcl was about embracing adapting to changes and facing gentrification like the burning school
They're both experimental in their artstyle and music direction, almost like they're responding to their generation's culture and perceptions of life. Sonny Boy on indie rock. FLCL on alternative rock.

Both are rather short coming-of-age stories that lean especially on the chaotic and rapid aspect of growing up.
Despite the difference in when the titles were released (FLCL in 2000, Sonny Boy in 2021...two decades apart) both are very experimental works that make use of unique visuals and gripping music to amplify their messages.
For both series, you are often left wondering what you watched and the broader meaning behind the episode, but upon closer analysis and rewatching scenes things start clicking and making sense as you start contextualizing things.
Both are extremely abstract coming of age stories. Astonishgly similar soundtracks (japanese alt rock) that fit the bittersweet tones perfectly.
Sonny Boy tackles the subject of growing up and learning to be your own person with a heavy use of surreal visuals and metaphors. FLCL tackles the subject of growing up and learning to be your own person with a heavy use of surreal visuals and metaphors. The key difference is that FLCL is a comedy with intense rock music, Sonny Boy is dead serious in tone and uses a naturalistic sound design.
