Blood and carnage galore. While the themes and motifs aren't alike, the unadulterated blood, gore, and violence is. The main difference in the overall flavor would be that while Hellsing Ultimate is very dark interspersed with Hirano's trademark quirky humor scenes, Elfen Lied has a lot more "cutesy" scenes and harem-esque motifs to fill in the gaps between carnage...
If you love the sight of GORE like limbs and heads being cut off, then this is the anime for you. The amount of violence is primarily the best features of this anime, similar to hellsing ultimate. Both anime have awesome supernatural powers. Recommend to people who loves gore and violence.

The two of them have A LOT of gore. They are about powerful MC that an other organistion want to stop him.

Similarities:
- Both anime are heavily focused on action, with lots of blood and gore.
- Both Alucard and Lucy have a dark past.
- Alucard and Lucy seem to not feel any guilt of killing.
Differences:
- There are more romantic aspects in Elfen Lied, while Helling Ultimate focuses more on the Master/Servant relationship of Alucard and Integra Hellsing.
- Hellsing has a much more darker atmosphere, but Elfen Lied has more cute and comedic scenes.

What makes a good horror anime? Craziness? Blood? Mabe some gore?
Well to tell only the truth, it's all of those plus more; and these two have tons of it.
The moment you start craving horror it's as if your automatically addicted to it.
Like it was the part of our very being; that craves for nothing more, but violince and blood.
Even though we know, that it can't be truly satisfied by this alone.
That is exactly why I've suggested these,
because there is no meaning in violence and agony; unless there's a story behind it.
This is a rather light recommendation.
Although these two do not really share the same type of story, they're similar due to the fact that there's violence and gore in both.
- Hellsing Ultimate is really dark, there isn't too much of a sad backstory behind it.
- Elfen Lied on the other hand has a sad and dark (less than Hellsing though)
That aside, main characters are total bad asses and demonstrate a hell of a show everywhere they go.
Two of the goriest anime series in existence. the big difference is EL has a good story, while Hellsing doesn't.

Gore, gore and gore. Elfen Lied and Hellsing Ultimate are two of the goriest anime that I’ve ever sat down and watched.
Aside from the fact that both are gory AF, both are short seinen anime (Hellsing Ultimate feels longer with it’s longer than average episodes), and they have moments of lightness that disrupt the dark and serious stories at times. Watch both if you can handle gore.
