Death and depression. Just a ton of death and depression, despite simple ideas Re:Zero and Elfen Lied, seem to utilise onto a level like unprecedented in showing what true despair looks like.
Re:Zero doing this with Subaru constantly dying in the worst ways imaginable. Elfen Lied doing this with Lucy disembodying enemies with ease. Both characters diverge into a state of hopelessness as if it were a rollercoaster of up and downs in the path of their future, with Subaru making his way there, Lucy doing so very early on.
Both are good psychological anime, with Re:Zero being slightly better in most aspects.
