I feel like the main character's development is a bit similar in both anime. In Tokyo Ghoul, Kaneki started off as this normal, boring guy who was tortured and forced into awful circumstances. This is the same in Darwin's Game, since Kaname was forced into the game through the death of his friend.
Both anime also give off that dark vibe that just makes my stomach turn (but in a good way). They also have that psychological element and isn't just a plotless action anime.
Student joins hell of a world. Share similar ideals in not wanting to do death to others. Though this conflicts as time pass. Similar character development too.
