Both are samurai stories for a mature audience, with lot's of bloody fights, sexuel content and some underlying message for the attentive viewers.
Both have really good art and a dark mood.

Both are dark Edo era samurai stories about revenge, featuring traditional music, slow pacing, and sudden outbursts of medieval brutality, deceit, objectification, insanity, and gory violence.
