Nadesico is often viewed as a 'response' to Evangelion, but it can also be linked to other Gainax productions as well, especially Gunbuster and even Otaku no Video (Gainax productions have a lot of common threads). In the case of Gunbuster and Nadesico, both are most similar in their tonality, which can lurch back and forth between zany comedy to stark moments of pathos and loss.
