Both of these stories involve a relationship that starts out in high school and keeps on progressing after high school.
I was surprised no one had recommended Itazura na Kiss yet, since it has a similar feel to it.
Both have:
~A strong love connection
~The story shows the characters growing up
~A very heart-warming story, with an equally heart-warming ending
If you like one, you'll probably like the other :)

Clannad is like the first part of Itazuma na kiss, one of the best love stories not only in anime, in the history. Clannad an Clannad After Story show the greatest moments of an anime history, and not only love. The life, plenty.
