Both are romantic slice-of-life dramas that are mostly ordinary but also have a touch of the supernatural ("Clannad" has the Illusory World, while "Orange" has time-travel). They're both really sad and emotional anime, and have regrets as a major theme.
Tomoya and Kakeru are both brooding, angsty teens with a really tragic past (including the deaths of their mothers) but generally hide their trauma from others with a smile, while Nagisa and Naho are both really kind-hearted girls who are very shy, but nevertheless try to be there for the male lead in any way they can. That said, Kakeru is notably more depressed than Tomoya,
