The kids in both anime use skills/technologies to have "souls" separated a while to go to alternative worlds (often in a condition of not being dead) that have creatures look black (ghosts/illegals).

Same atmosphere and mysterious "unseen worlds" like parallel dimensions. In Dennou Coil it's virtual reality, home of cyberpets while in Ghost Hound it's the home of ghosts. There are kids in both series who try to discover these worlds.
Involves kids living a second, overlayed "meta" reality without the full awareness of their parents, or participation of adults.
Ultimately, their activities relate to something going very wrong and spilling over into the real world.

In both animes the unknown beings are similar. The characters are both a young group of kids who are curious and get into lots of trouble and somehow they discover something beyond their knowing.

In both series, there is a gap between fantasy and reality that is explored.
Both series make a connection with its character cast (similar age range) and takes a setting in a somewhat utopia like world. From that world, there is supernatural and mysteries that surrounds the events presented throughout both series.
Both series features layers and layers of mystery, some which are unique and becomes a source of plot device in both series.
Quite a rare gem worth checking out.
