When you think about it, high-school students are not always nice at each other. They get into heated arguments and fights. They always want to be the best at what they do. They are selfish. But in the end, all is game and fair, and everything is worthy of respect. Both series capture these realistic elements like it's the easiest thing to do.

Although on the surface they may seem to be relatively simple in terms of plot, Haikyuu!! and Hibike! Euphonium both have a drama aspect that is cleverly integrated. This is sometimes done through flashbacks into events that occurred in the past; other times, this is done through tensions among the main characters and/or their teammates. Both also have a similar premise - a group of high school students striving to achieve some distant goal (in Haikyuu!!, it's advancing through a tournament; in Hibike!, it's becoming the best band in the prefecture). For those of you wondering why instruments and volleyball are being related, hear me out.
Both are set in high school but mainly focus on the character's after curriculars
Both have a strong focus on characters and character interaction
Both have a huge cast of memorable characters but both focus on a select 2 or 3 (2 for haikyuu and 3 for Euphonium)
If you've seen at least one of these I highly recommend the other. You don't have to be into volleyball to enjoy haikyuu because I wasn't (though some music knowledge may be required to enjoy euphonium).
The cast of both series struggle in order to win a competition, and they show the obstacles and improvements that they have as they advance. I found Hibike better because it feels more realistic, besides having better animation and soundtrack.
They both focus on a group of first-years who enrolled in a school and joined a certain club (band, volleyball). There had been some drama between the senior club members so the clubs are not as strong as they could be. The shows both focus on teamwork and you learn a lot about the topic(s) of the show(s). It also deals with competitions and bringing a club back on to its feet again. Also, Kageyama and Reina are kind of similar.
