Getter Robo is by far the biggest influence on TTGL, as admitted by the staff and as evident in the show. New Getter Robo isn't the best of its franchise (the Getter Robo Saga manga is), but is likely the most solid and accessible of the animated incarnations.
Gurren Lagann and Getter Robo are constantly compared, but to put it really concisely— Getter Robo is Gurren Lagann, minus comedy, plus horror. They're similar enough if you like one you'll probably find something to like in the other, but different enough they can have fans with entirely different sensibilities.
Getter Robo's influence on Gurren Lagann is both intentional and extremely obvious to anyone that's seen both. Gurren Lagann keeps a lot of the horror-ish elements but downplays their scariness. Getter Robo wants to tell stories that are far darker than Gurren Lagann.
New Getter Robo is by far the easiest version of Getter Robo

Gurren Lagann takes heavy inspiration from the Getter Robo OVAS, The spiral energy works almost the same as Getter Rays in Getter Robo Armageddon, the Gurren Lagann color theme is based on the Getter Robo's and the story and narrative borrow heavily from it. It would be a crime to miss out on Shin Getter Robo as Gurren Lagann shares MANY similarities with it. .

TTGL's main inspiration was Getter Robo. Like TTGL, it has drills, a lot of gattai, and an energy that is kinda similar to spiral energy known as the getter rays. Reading the manga is recommended as well. Both Kamina and Ryoma are the greatest examples of traditional hot blooded heroes. New Getter Robo is a remake and sticks closer to the manga.

New Getter Robo is a 2004 remake of the original 1970s Getter Robo which Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is heavily based on. If you can handle the retro mecha and character designs (and if you can't, you're a philistine), this is an excellent series to check out and see where the combining mecha sub-genre has its origins.
Almost obvious and self-explanatory. Both have mechas. Both have badass heroes. Both have FIGHTING SPIRIT.

Giant mecha robots that join together to create even larger and more powerful robots. They have over-the-top crazy action where the human characters fight in their mechs against the non-human opponents who threaten humanity. They have mechs with giant drills. They have similar steep power creeps. Similar energy systems (getter rays and spiral energy).
Getter Robo was THE main influence on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann according to its creators, and it shows. From both featuring a group of hot-blooded guys piloting combining super robots as their leads, to using the indomitable human spirit as their power, to the similarities between Getter Rays and Spiral Energy, and even some of the plots Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann does are taken straight from Getter Robo. If you like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, check Getter Robo out.
