Both series feature seemingly ordinary protagonists, that is until you put them behind the wheel of a car. Both series are about racing tuner cars during the nighttime. Both feature a very similar art style, although Wangan is more refined in this aspect. Pacing is the same with both series starting out slowly, but gaining momentum in the later episodes. Both series spend a lot of time focused on the cars themselves, treating them as a part of the main cast.
Bottom line is if you liked one, then you'll like the other. And if you hated one then you'll most likely hate the other. I

Both are Based on Street-Racing, But Initial D is based on Mountain Drifting and Wangan Midnight is Based on Motorway Street-Racing.
Two of the best anime series about cars you can find! Similar characters and hardcore realism.
Both main characters are highschoolers and drive a car which unexpectedly defeats newer models in races (Fairlady Z in Wangan Midnight, AE86 Trueno in Initial D). There's a lot of real life models showcased accurately in both series (particularly the Nissan Skyline GT-R).
Wangan Midnight was animated by A.C.G.T (the studio behind Initial D Fourth Stage) and based on a manga by Michiharu Kusunoki that was serialised in Weekly Young Magazine (the same magazine as Initial D, but debuting three years earlier).

The two animes are about car racing. Initial D is about street-racing on mountains and Wangan Midnight is about street-racing on freeway. So, they are both similar.

if you enjoy racing and cars in general this would be your best bet. fast cars racing the highways of japan and a small sneak peak into what the car group Midnight Club that were all about cars that could go 300kmh+ for periods of time reaching 10 minutes.
