Both animes have a very similar story (a guardian figure, in the form of a very skillful warrior, protecting the weaker innocent.) Seirei no moribito, being a tv series based on an epic fantasy novel series, obviously contains much more details in terms of story, characters and the setting. Sword of the stranger lacks that detail since its only a movie targeted at a smaller audience.
If you want a more fast paced, adrenaline-driven version of moribito with better action, then you dont need to look further than stranger - Mukoh Hadan. Though moribito has much more depth in terms of story and is much

Titanic effort of animators that brought hightdetailed backgrounds close to real paintings among with great dynamic fight scenes that surpass your typical shounen battle with more blabbering about being mighty than actually kickass action. Also starting point for theplot is nearly the same.

About a lone warrior with a secret past. They become the protector for a young boy who is being pursued. Historical settings, with a little bit of the supernatural. Politics, drama, and action. And fine animation. 'Stranger' is a LOT more violent.

About a warrior with a secret past. They become the protector for a young boy who is being hunted. Historical settings, with a little bit of the supernatural. Both are similarly animated.
Seirei no Moribito demonstrated the definition of protection similarly to how a mother protect their children. Stranger: Mukou Hadan has shown the same atmosphere of protection. Characters of both shows have same expectations and roles to play. There are slight differences but one could express each other as an alternative version.
- A story of a warrior guarding a kid to the safe place.
- Awesome fighting scenes. More fighting scenes in Seirei no Moribito plus Balsa's Spear Technique is top-notch.
- Lovely Edo-esque world.
- Wanna see a Shiba Inu biting people? Watch Mukou Hadan. Wanna see a Kappa talking, maybe having interest in learning Kappa language? Watch Seirei no Moribito.
Both have a strong main warrior character, taking care of a young boy and protecting it from people, wanting to catch/murder it, developing parent-kid relationship. Both have amazing art and animation and good plot
Both have similar stories, both are beautifully animated, and both are fantastic stories of courage and love in the face of fear.

Both have the same plot revolving around a strong adult character protecting a young boy from several assailants who try to kill/take him away.
Moribito takes place in a fictional fantasy world that looks very Japan-inspired, while Sword of the Stranger actually takes place in 1500's Japan.

Both series follow a guardian protecting a young lad who is being pursued for some mysterious reasons. The guardians are both incredibly skilled warriors with a rather dark past which leads them to disdain conflict, only engaging in it as self defense. They both take place in a quasi realistic ancient oriental setting, with a similar tone. However, Moribito has more of a mystical element to it's story.
