If you found Watamote to be too cringey and just wanted the laughs derived from a good-for-nothing sister pissing off her brother by being a lazy otaku, then look no more: Himouto is the cute-chibi spazzy answer to Watamote's black comedy despair.

Popular confident girl desperately tries to live life as an otaku vs anxiety crippled girl who thinks her otaku skills should make her popular.

Both shows feature a girl that mostly plays games and uses the internet in her free time. A Hikki-NEET-Otaku kind of character.

- A otaku girl dependent on your tastes. With fear of showing as it really is.

Both feature main female leads who love gaming and anime. Both characters also act completely different in school and public compared to their behavior at home. Also they both have fairly rough sibling relationships (though for different reasons).

Both are comedy and slice of life centered on the main character's curious behavior in public/at home, although Umaru-Chan is more light hearted and cheerful and Watamote is somewhat dark humor. Both enjoyable!

Both are slice of life anime about girl-otaku protagonists with brothers that don't want to put up with their bullshit. Both characters are very relatable that it is almost creepy. There are a few differences though. Umaru is usually always cheerful, cute, is good at school, very popular, etc. Tomoko though is basically depressed, not cute, not good at school, not popular, etc. They are basically similar only in the sense that they share an appreciation for being a lazy fucking bumb that likes games, anime, and manga. Both have alter-egos when in public too!

These shows are connected buy just how opposite they are. The protagonist of Himouto is a girl who doesn't really care about popularity, despite being the most popular, and she is seemingly flawless, not to mention the fact that everything goes her way. While Tomoko is a girl who cares about being popular, despite not being it, she is basically nothing but flaws, and not to mention that nothing goes her way.

This series is very alike, thinking about the fact that the protagonists both are otakus, shut-ins, love games and anime, have a best friend with huge boobs (sorry I just had to say it), live with an older brother, Short stories with no plot,Little to no charcter development but I have to warn you, The protagonist of Himouto! Umaru-chan is actually the exact opposite of Tomoko. Umaru is the cliche protgonist who is always charismatic, attractive and lucky. Umaru looks like a model, has so many friends, admired anywhere she goes (both her looks and personality), confident, sociable (when not being lazy) with perfect grades no   read more

They are both about otaku girls. Watamote is more about a socially awkward girl who's journey is about making friends. In contrast Umaru-Chan is about A girl who is loved by people who, Behind closed doors is more of an otaku. They take on otaku's from opposite sides of the social spectrum which Is a cool way to see two different anime.
