Apart from being both anime produced by Gonzo, these series have several things in common.
Both are strangely underappreciated anime loosely inspired by a book or movie, and both have a unique mix of sci-fi elements & a historical setting.
Both have a fair amount of drama, betrayals, romance, action, and mecha.
Certain characters are quite similar (Katsushiro=Albert, Kirara=Eugénie, Kambei=Edmond, etc).
There's also another similarity, but it's a major spoiler, so you have to find out yourself.
