Both shows have humanity struggling to survive on giant moving mega cities as some monster creature attacks. The subject area of how humans arrived on the moving cities differ overall, but both shows also have moments of cute banter between cast members who are from a different places. Gargantia can be classified as a mecha show, but it is no where near Gundam levels of mecha genere. Both shows are great.
Also fun mascot characters, Pipe and Chamber for the win!
I think Deca-Dence's twist and Gargantia's basic concept have more similarities than it may first seem like. At their core, both have a focus on a character trying to figure out their own issues by living in a world alien to their own, and getting inspired to gradually rise above themselves and the propaganda distilled in them. Both are also chiefly inspired by a girl who matters dearly to them.
Deca-Dence is more about rising against the system whereas Gargantia is about protecting a new system from the old one, but both fight back against the world they were born into.
Both series present a dystopian future in which what remains of humanity lives in armored, mobile megacities to protect themselves from monster attacks. In Suisei no Gargantia they live in giant ships, since the land has been covered entirely with water. In Deca-dence they live in a large mobile fortress to protect themselves from the attacks of the monsters which have devastated the Earth. In both series, as the plot progresses, we will find out the reason for the dystopic situation they are in.
