Both are great action mecha series who started airing in spring 2013 and provide great mecha battles and a little romance in between.
The only big difference in the animes is that Valvrave starts with a boy who is used to a peaceful live and has to adapt to war while Gargantia starts with a boy who is more like a programmed soldier then a human.
If u like a slower pace series thats more story driven i would go for Gargantia and for a good fast pace action series i would go for Valvrave although this is just my opinion.
A boy from a military life style crash lands on earth where everyone is peaceful and killing anyone is absolutely forbidden. He must come to learn what it means to be peaceful, and lose his sense of war. Kind of like L-elf. He also has a boss robot like Valrave.
