Both are lighthearted post-NGE mecha anime that act as reconstructions of the genre. The main character of each show joins an organization through circumstances that result in them pursuing a career prior to the one that they want to (Ayato Kamina of RahXephon wants to be a painter; Akito Tenwaka of Nadesico wants to be a cook), and both are mecha pilots who have a woman (Haruka in RahXephon, Yurika in Nadesico) who obviously has feelings for them (although Yurika is MUCH more open about her feelings for Akito than Haruka is with her feelings for Ayato).
