Both have beautiful imagery and music (with openings composed by Yoko Kano). Intrigues, romance and fantasy are elements that are present in the plot. They also revolve around godlike mecha and the inner journey to find a place in the world.
Both main characters travel to "other worlds". Both of these anime are beautiful and the worlds are creatively developed. Both stories have kick butt mech fights. Both stories theme's revolve around changing the world/fate/saving the world. Both have good romance plots.
