Both are brutally gorey. They both use great soundtracks and character motivations to tug at the heart strings. Neither series is for the faint of heart. Both anime have excellent world building and setting. As much cruelty as beauty.

Both of them have a main character who wants to become an explorer and can smile no matter what hardship they are faced with and can remain optimistic no matter what., and the place to be explored it's very dangerous and many explorers die on their journey.
Both of them have complex themes and dark aspects to them.
Both of them aren't afraid to show how cruel the world can be.
Both of them can be very psychological at points.

The characters want to uncover the mysteries of their world or nation. In Shingeki, they want to explore the outside world but cannot because of Titans. In Made in Abyss, they want to uncover the bottom of the abyss but it is not an easy task. There are dangers everywhere. They both have also special elite forces to who can handle the dangers. Both story are dark. Don't let the first few episodes of Made in Abyss fool you. It will get darker as you go further to the episodes.
