Both titles are about the Shinsengumi in the same era of Japan's history. A handful of the characters are featured in both works, so it's interesting seeing the same historic people portrayed differently.

Both are historical portrayals of the Shinsengumi. While Peace Maker's historical value is somewhat ruined for the sake of entertainment, it still contains a few history lessons. Shiro no Kiseki, however, offers a very good insight into the life of Hijikata Toshizo, the demon vice commander of the Shinsengumi, and seems to be quite accurate. It doesn't only show us his Shinsengumi days, but also follows the rest of his life all the way up to his death. Both are a must see for anyone wanting to learn about the Shinsengumi.
