Both series were written by Ichiro Okouchi, who reused many of the same ideas present in Code Geass. Most notably the alternate history setting with a macguffin (Sakuradite in Code Geass, the C-ball in Princess Principal) to allow for the futuristic tech in Code Geass (despite being set in our equivalent of the 1960s) or steampunk in the alternate late 1800s in Princess Principal. Both series feature alternate versions of the British Empire with the Holy Britannian Empire of Code Geass being a global superpower and the Britain in Princess Principal being split up much like East/West Germany.
The Ange-Charlotte relationship really reminded me of Lelouch
