well its actually both this and r2 the main character and his best friend developed from best of friends to the worst of enemies
I found myself noting a lot of similarities between the two shows, in the first few episodes of Dragonaut particularly. The main characters of both, Jin and Lelouch, both go through traumatic experiences concerning their families and end up basically alone. Both protagonists have cheerful/naive friends who turn angry and bitter against them. Both involve a mysterious girl with unusual abilities. Both involve some type of government corruption and military power, including large machine type weapons that the combatants ride in/on.
Code Geass though, is more intricate and has a lot more twists and turns
