The way ef, presents it's animations is very similar to that of Negima. The difference is their storylines. Compared to Negima!?, which uses the animation for more of a magic/adventure (Harry Potter-like) anime, ef uses these animations for more of a cross between romance and drama (similar to that of Kare Kano.)
I make this recommendation rather on aesthetic rather than plot reasons.
Among all anime made by studio Shaft, both Negima!? and ef share a similar animation style that looks incredibly detailed for the era they were made. If you're a fan of studio Shaft please check both anime, they're so well animated that you'd hardly believe they were made almost 20 years ago.
