Both are about unexplainable deaths related to supernatural. In both, fighting and surviving is a matter of intelligence and there are twists and surprises. Personally I enjoyed Shiki more, because it gives a deeper development to its characters and a more intricate plot. Still, Both are awesome animes that will keep you thrilled till the end, so if you enjoyed one, you will probably enjoy the other.
Although the plot is entirely different, Death Note and Shiki are extremely similar in many ways. Both of them flesh out the two sides well enough so that you can't call any of them right or wrong. Both of them have main characters(Light in Death note and Toshio in Shiki) who don't stop at anything to achieve their goals and aren't afraid to make sacrifices or take underhanded measures. Not to mention these characters actually make the audience feel for the antagonists. Shiki has much more despair than Death note but both of them can get your heart racing

The styles and storylines are different, but they give you a similar feeling. Both are shounen thrillers with a lot of psychological tension. They keep you on the edge of your seat, and wanting the next episode. Modern setting, with a supernatural element. Death is a central feature. Later in the series, they cover both sides of the "warfare" somewhat sympathetically. Shiki additionally has horror. It also covers several characters in depth, while Death Note only covers a few.

Death Note and Shiki are similar in the sense that both are trying to fight evil, but the lines between good and evil get harder to discern
