Both of these series have a similar vibe for me. Both the main characters are highschool students bored of their current lives, who accidentally end up with power over a huge amount of people. They both keep their real identities a secret from their followers, and their followers are a mixture of old, young, rich, poor, etc.
Both series also have darkly fantastical creatures; in Death Note, the Shinigame, and in Durarara, the Dullahan. However, despite their ominous appearances and folktales, neither being is evil. They both give guidance to the main character, without supplying all the information and working for their own cause.
I would definitely

After watching both of these series, you can't sleep well because you're still thinking about it. Both have lovable characters, a cool plot and both are masterpieces.
Oh, and one bad thing. Both have characters who are easy to cosplay. So...
epic anime + normal looking characters = many crappy cosplays
both main characters are a bit bored and disappointed with there lives as they are right now, but there is more than meets the eye. Both mains want to change the world, only in Death Note has a more cruel way of doing that. and the main characters are unknown to the outside world.
Both of these stories have a dark undertone as well as complex and fascinating characters that seem crazed and demonic at times. Every episode is alluring and is as good as the last. Durarara and Death Note both manage to contain very deep story lines with a hint of supernatural to them that doesn't deter from this plot. Two of the main characters, Izaya and Light share complex and fascinating personalities that make these shows really worth watching.

Both animes have a similar feel of mystery, plot twists and a wide range of interesting characters all with their own quirks (though in this respect Durarara comes on top). And yes, supernatural elements. Of both, I liked Durarara better, mainly due to the interesting characters. Death Note has a more complete ending as compared to Duarara, though this is expected since the latter is yet to be followed by specials. Overal if you like one it is probable that you may enjoy the other.
Though the plots are different, there is a similar dynamic between the characters in both series; ie a main character who is genius, excentric, and more than he seems to be on the surface, and at least one supporting character who is geinius, excentric, and takes great joy out of his own ability to manipulate people. And thenthere are a bunch of other people who are also a bit off in society. Durarara!! is a bit more humurous than Death Note, but just as dark.
Death Note has a very elaborate plot with many turns along the way. Watch the first few episodes of Durarara!! and you'll understand the similarity there. This anime never slows down. You'll be interested from start to finish!
I found Izaya from 'D!' and L from 'DN' very similar, (may be the spoiler!) they're both are acting like play in some kind of game (and that chess motive in 'D!' is similar to that thinking process of L with candies while he was chasing after Kira)

They both involve supernatural themes and a rivalry between two males.
If you liked Death Note, you might like Durarara!!. Considering you like a good story with actual unexpected twists, that is.
I like how the both of these anime have a modern setting. They both are filled with twists and turns and will make you want to watch the next episode right away. They both are really suspenseful and have an amazing soundtrack that will give you "eargasms" (I fell in love with Durarara's OP and ED themes) I also like how the main characters start off having a boring life and the next ting they know is that they are doing all kinds of incredible thing good or bad.
Durarara!! has a mysterious air to it just like Death Note and has many psychological themes throughout. If Death Note is the knife under the table, then DRRR is the shifty eyed waiter, the chef with a bad temper and the one person in the room that was officially pronounced dead weeks ago.
Durarara is a story about a town..no, a city with a plethora of viewpoints and experiences to be observed by the watcher. I personally have rated it a 10/10, and it is the only anime i have given a perfect score for many reasons I can't put here because this a recommendation

It really isn't a lot like Durarara, though it does have supernatural aspects in it and involves quite a bit of crime related stuff. If you're even the least bit an anime fan, then you have to watch Death Note. It's one of those classics that kind of hooks you in and doesn't quite let you go until around the end of the anime, and will most likely have you up all night.
