Both are pretty good anime drawn around one boy and both have their fair share of action and drama. Sola has a little more action and kanon has a little more drama. Both like talking about hopes and dreams though.
I watched Kanon 2006 and it was great. After starting Sola I realized that the anime was quite similar and just as good. If you liked Sola you love Kanon. And the same is true if you started with Kanon. ^^
Sola reminded me a lot of Makoto, Mai, and the theme of running or chasing their pasts.
Both of the shows have a romantic/mysterious feel to them.

Written by the same person (Naoki Hisaya), both shows are intense and often painful romance/drama stories with a hint of moe tossed into the mix.
In both series, drama plays out quite heavily in the story among the main protagonist and the friends he meets.
In both series, a slice of life theme is played out that is mixed in with drama, romance, and supernatural elements. There is some comedy present although lesser so as the series progresses that is replaced with more emotional moments.
Both series are moving and an excellent watch that touches upon the more dramatic side of anime.
