+ I found the development of main characters to follow similar paths (throughout the duration of the show they both mature from being annoying cowards - one as a timid high school girl and the other a young lordling fussed over and shielded from the big bad world - and grow into their roles
+ very little romance in both (there are some moments, but not to the point where you could add a romance tag)
+ both are fantasy adventures
+ both involve whole countries
+ they both do a great job of creating their own original worlds, with their own rules, origins and traditions
