Akatsuki no Yona

Yona of the Dawn is pretty much Twelve Kingdom's dumber little sister. While I enjoyed Yona a lot, I didn't feel it had anything that Juuni Kokuki did better. That being said, if you liked one of them, you'll like the other one too.
Red-haired heroines find themselves forced to make a transition from ignorant and inexperienced to queens/empresses (or, in the case of Akatsuki, growing as a person to be fit for the role) of kingdoms. They both have handsome protectors willing to put their lives on the line for them. And the character arcs required as they go from dependent to independent in order to become rulers makes the two series very comparable.
Both have ancient China/asian costumes and design. A key difference between the two is that Twelve Kingdoms is far more fantasy, with a talking mouse-person and the like; its plot starting with a high school

These two series are mainly about their red-headed female protagonist's struggle to survive, in the situation they both have found themselves in and how they adapt & develop along their journey.
Shows recommended for those who'd like to watch the birth of great rulers.
Both are fantastic Asian-inspired fantasies with absolutely kick-ass heroines (they both have red hair too!) and a great cast of well-developed characters. The heroines have to go through a ton of hardships as they mature from naive young girls to capable leaders.
Made more similar in that both shows seemingly look like tired shoujo cliches but goes to completely smash that impression and be something awesome. Yona is more light-hearted of the two, while Juuni Kokuki/12 Kingdoms is more like the traditional epic fantasy (despite some modern elements).
Medieval eastern culture, the athmosphere, red haired heroine, fantasy.
When I started watching Akatsuki no Yona - I was hoping for the new Juuni Kokuki. Yona has more jokes, but still stays serious and characters are incredible. It's ongoing right now (19|24) and I'm not dissapointed and enjoy it to no end.
Both have female protagonists struggling for their righteous throne in a Chinese-inspired fantasy setting. Juuni Kokuki begins very confusing and dark, but has a major change in feel after the first arc and becomes a lot like Akatsuki no Yona. - Just the opening should give the same feel already.
Period piece based in ancient Asia. Red-haired heroine. A journey to learn more about her country and to get it back.
Both anime show a slow build of the female protagonist from insecure and uncertain in themselves and people around them, to becoming more certain, finding their focus and what they want to do along with how they're going to do it.
There's a lot of differences as well, Akatsuki no Yona is more light hearted and has a great many humor scenes, while Juuni Kokuki is a more political and a bit of a scary anime. Juuni Kokuki is also a bit more slow moving, developing their characters differently from AnY.
With that said, AnY does not feel forced or fake, both series deliver what they want

Both are the stories of red headed female leaders surviving and adapting to their surroundings when thrown into what is essentially a new world for both of them. Their settings are both medieval as well. The biggest difference is that Akatsuki no Yona has more comedic moments in it.

Both have a female protag that's fighting to win their kingdom back. They both go on journies (although one is more heavy and isekai-ish). But overall, similar vibes if you're looking for something to scratch that itch.

Well, both series start out similar. Our red-haired protagonists are forced to leave the comfort of their world to enter somewhere unfamiliar where they have to fight for their survival.
Through hardships, they must overcome their weaknesses and character flaws, toughening up in the process. Yona and Youko are both criticized for being rather annoying and insufferable characters in the beginning, but both of them grow to become strong leaders in their own right.
Both characters are supposed to take on a leadership role. Youko is supposed to be a queen and Yona is a princess tasked with commanding the dragon warriors. They are both
