Each serie have this mafia/yakuza climate. They are packed with gun battles, as well as more emotional, sad scenes. Requiem for Phantom focuses on main characters and their decisions, while Black Lagoon is more about criminal world in general.
Both shows try to represent similar concepts of a normal Japanese guy diving into the world of criminal minds and professional killers with a dark tone of illustration. The main protagonist struggled a similar sequence of entering the underworld while the shows also constantly questioning the justification to the action of killing others and the moral dilemmas among the main characters.
