They both focus on drama, romance, Slice of life type of genre. You're able to put your subjectivity into interpretation of the events, making yourself feel immersed into the anime. How far are you willing to chase the one you love - type of anime. If you like Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, you will definately love Kimi No Iru Machi.

Both series are considered romance anime that depicts the main male protagonist getting involved with various girls. However, there are problems that occurs throughout both series that hinders relationships such as accidents and misunderstandings.
The main male protagonist from both series are a bit indecisive at various points but does make certain decisions on his own for the benefit of others. There's also some comedy and fan service. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien adapts more of a serious mood though especially in the beginning. However, both series has a similar atmosphere.
Both deal with a guy in dilema about past and present love. Although kimi ga nozomu eien have a few eechi scenes but kimi no inai machi had me cry at the other tragic love ending. Ultimately the girl who was true d8dnt get the guy. Same on both sides.

Both shows follow similar patterns, regarding a former love interest coming back after being away for so long, and inadvertently messing up the MC's current relationships. They both also deal with lots of dramatic cases where each character is both right and wrong, and makes it hard to put blame on a single character
