The most striking resemblance I see in these two anime series is in the characters Arima and Chiaki - their background, character and weaknesses (which are all further explored in their respective manga series). Both are laugh-out-loud funny at times but have similar themed dark moments. If you didn't like the wait for Nodame and Chiaki to finally establish their relationship, Kare Kano is refreshing in that their romantic relationship hits off pretty early in the series. If you loved the romance between Nodame and Chiaki and wanted more, Kare Kano is for you.
