"Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru" is an anime version of the classic story by Kenji Miyazawa, most often referred to in English by the title "Night on the Galactic Railroad". That story is referred to numerous times throughout "Giovanni no Shima" ("Giovanni's Island"), which includes several dream/fantasy sequences of events from that story.
Giovanni no Shima's story at it's core is a very liberal retelling of and homage to Kenji Miyazawa's 1927 novel "Milky Way Railroad". It features the book itself as a plot device, and uses images and animation sequences very similar to those of the 1985 movie version of the story. Some finer story details and metaphors in Giovanni no Shima can only be understood knowing the 1927 story, so watching Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru first make the experience better.
