Two fairly timid MC's are somewhat roped into doing an activity/hobby they never thought to do outside of school where Yama is to do with hiking and Houkago is with fishing.
We venture through said hobbies and learn quite a bit on them along with the MC's.
Both MC's also wanted to be in the handicrafts club before but in the end ended up doing what they do now.
They are rather fun to watch and have their little bits of drama here and there too but overall a good time to be had by the two.

A cute girl who likes indoor activities meeting a cute childhood friend who loves outdoor and drags the protagonist to the outdoor world.
Both shows are relatively laid back, do a good job of capturing scenery, and feature cute girls doing outdoor activities.
The main characters in each of the shows are also similar and face similar struggles. They are both into crafting and very scared of the outdoor activities they end up engaging in, but with encouragement from their friends and a lot of practice and determination they are able to face their fears and find fun in the new activity!
In Houkago Teibou Nisshi, you can expect to learn some about fishing, while in Yama no Susume, you expect to learn similarly about mountain climbing.

Both feature a group of high school girls enjoying their outdoor activities. (For Yama no Susume is hill/mountain climbing while Houkago Teibou Nisshi is fishing)
Both have a very laid-back atmosphere, you will enjoy Houkago Teibou Nisshi if you enjoy Yama no Susume and vice versa
