On the surface, these two anime could not be more different from each other. However, even though the animation style and premise of Shinsekai Yori is quite different to Beastars, I think both of these shows explore similar themes in similar ways.
They both look at fictional societies that have clear parallels with our own. These societies are presented to us and examined through a cast of young characters that grow and mature through the course of the show. Viewing these fictional and mysterious societies through this lens allows for nuanced themes to be developed. Themes like finding one's own identity, navigating a supposedly 'equal'
