Acchi Kocchi, Momokuri Recommendations
In these potently cute chibi portrayals of innocent young love, shoujo romance (Momokuri) and seinen comfort (Acchi Kocchi - Place to Place) converge. These are the Turkish Delight of romance anime, dependably sweet and fun.
Ironically, Acchi Kocchi's star pair may appear to fit shoujo stereotypes: a blushing shy girl, and a cool, quiet guy who is adept in many fields and always knows the right thing to say. Meanwhile, Momokuri's girl is obsessed with a short, ordinary boy; it's a purer, healthier form of the entertainment offered by shounen harem shows.
The familiar frustration of the indefinitely postponed confession is softened here. Acchi Kocchi's ultra-light
4-koma tone averts the tension of waiting for relationship developments. Momokuri begins with the confession.
Boy cares for girl, but doesn't know the true nature of her feelings, and cute situations result. In Acchi Kocchi, he doesn't realize she is in love with him, but gives her his time and support without thought of reward. She is the most gentle tsundere; she never harms him, but is mortified by the potential exposure of her feelings. In Momokuri, he doesn't fathom the depth of her obsession, and adorable embarrassment results from their mutual awkward worries: "Am I good enough for her?" "Will I scare him away?"
In this kind of show, it's the girl who develops nosebleeds, triggered by his thoughtful actions or romantic words, more often than by his simple attractiveness. In Acchi Kocchi, she spews pints of blood in comedic cartoon fashion, with no ill effect. In Momokuri, the bleeding is acknowledged and becomes part of the story.
Finally, maximizing the cute appeal, her friends will compare her to a cute animal; occasionally the animators depict her with ears and a tail. In Momokuri, she is a hyper-enthusiastic puppy. In Acchi Kocchi, she is a shy but affectionate cat.
Watch these shows, and come to know the true power of a gentle pat on a girl's head.
