These series are not about spectacular murder cases, but rather about the mysteries of everyday life. They turn the ordinary into something special, relying on atmosphere and scenery to draw in the audience. The 'cases' (if you may call them so) are small in scale, but both series show the emotional impact that they make on the involved characters.
Series with unique experiences are hard to come by and so it is best to seize the moment when it arise. Putting aside the brilliant music that obviously isn’t the main factor for the show’s success, these shows capitalize on the mysteries of daily life with intriguing cases that will keep you on your toes. The distinctive characteristic of the main detective in each series are indisputable with their carefree and lazy relaxing attitudes seemingly drawing attention.
Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru focuses more on the gruesome side of crime and attention-grabbing phenomenon. The intensity of each upcoming case builds up

Both are character-driven mystery anime, featuring a sharp but socially awkward amateur detective who has to be pushed into getting fully involved in each case by his/her friends. Sakurako's mysteries generally deal with heavier topics than Hyouka, but both shows are mainly interested in telling the stories of the people involved in each mystery, and in what the main characters learn about themselves and each other while piecing those stories together. The solution to the mystery itself isn't nearly as important, so for viewers who prefer a mystery show that's set up to let them "play detective" and try to solve each case, these shows

Both are episodic mystery anime. The main characters of both seem reluctant at first but eventually try solving the cases that intrigue them. The main difference is that Hyouka focuses more on simple school mysteries while Sakurako-san focuses on real crimes and mysteries that are life threatening.

Both have the mystery and sol aspects, but different kind of cases, pacing, and approach. Hyouka has the pointless yet intriguing everyday non-murder cases, slower yet clear solving pace and weighting logical approach more than its knowledge approach. You either like one and be bored with the other or just love hyouka. Damn straight.

Both are somewhat slice of life/mystery based. As they progress through their normal lives, an occurrence appears and the mystery is solved. In Hyouka, the male lead is the mystery solver and the female is the curious questioning character, while in Sakurako-san, the female lead is instead the mystery solver and the male is the curious questioning character.
Hyouka and Sakurako are similar in a handful of aspects
- Both involve solving mysteries
- Very similar feel
- Both anime give off a boring but curious vibe (which I don't mind)
Noticable difference:
- Sakurako is based on murder cases while Hyouka revolves around mysteries inside a school
Both are beautifully animated and revolve around interesting mysteries being solved. They have the same atmosphere with vivid animation, colorful and visually pleasing, really good music, good plot, great characters.
Hyouka is more innocent and classic but fun and breathtaking art. While Sakurako has more mature and crime-related mysteries.
