The main characters in Aikatsu and AKB0048 happen to have spunky, cheerful personalities. A friend happens to introduce them to the world of idols and they start on their own journey to become an idol, growing as a person as they do. If you're wanting a cast of cute, adorable girls who love singing, making fans, and having some friendly competition, then either of these shows will appeal!
Their protagonists are also similar, being quite naive, fun-loving and awkward, while the supporting casts are different but equally unique and over-the-top.
AKB0048 is much darker, with a post-apocalyptic space world and scifi action, while Aikatsu is softer, set in a slightly-more-modern version of Japan where everything is cute and sparkly.
