After "Jaku-chara Tomozaki-kun", watching the anime "NHK ni Youkoso!" is like switching from folk-pop to heavy metal. "NHK ni Youkoso!" deals very seriously with the issue of "hikikomori". Since the anime is from 2006, it already drew attention to the phenomenon at a time when it was not yet on everyone's lips. Both series involve a maladjusted main character who attempt to adjust and integrate into normal society. Both series involve a girl who pushes their own view on what they believe a “typical” person to be onto the MC. While Welcome to the NHK takes a more psychological and haunting approach, dealing with themes such as mental illness, hyper-fixation, and delusion, Bottom Tier Character deals with themes of breaking out of your shell, learning social skills, and how to effectively communicate with others.

Both anime focus on a main character who is an outcast and does not fit in with people or society. Each of these characters quickly meet a female lead character who is determined to help them improve their lives and fit back into society as a normal person.
