Maison Ikkoku

Both stories begin with main characters that are bereaved by the loss of their loved ones. Kyoko lost her husband and Tohru lost her mother.
A little by little, they overcome the pain of the mourning helped by a new life with a group of people comforting them.
Maison Ikkoku doesn't have a magical aspect into it. But I think they connect in a more deep level. Character development, themes and coming-of-age stories.
