Both of these sports anime are just as much about the characters' lives outside of a match, especially family relationships and a bit of romance. The main characters in both stories are heavily impacted by events in the past.
The overall feelings of the two shows are a little different (Area no Kinshi leans heavily on the drama, while Mix is more laid-back) and of course they feature different sports. But while watching Mix I am frequently reminded of Area no Kinshi and it's worth checking out one if you liked the other.
