Both are thrillers about the military, conspiracy, politics, and the interest of groups into a militarized society and war. Both include the use of fairly realistic, first generation mechas. While both feature UN missions, Patlabor deals with the aftermath of such a mission within Japan's domestic security services, while Flag is about an active mission inside a civil war ridden Asian country. Both flesh out the characters of the team working in the mission very well.
