The main characters are both civilians caught up in a conflict with giant aliens in space in a vessel filled with other civilians to protect en route to a destination far away. That's pretty much where the similarities end. Macross isn't too realistic and filled with comic relief while Sidonia is more serious and gritty. Macross's animation is dated and Sidonia is modern CGI. But if you can get past the differences, someone who enjoyed Sidonia may enjoy Macross as well.
