Both stories revolve around a young boy in Tibet as he grows to love a natural Tibetian animal which allows him to grow into a man (metaphorically). While the lad in Inu Monogatari doesn't love his home initially, he grows to appreciate the simple way of life there as the dog teaches him courage. In Tenguri, the lad loves his home but doesn't love the simple way of life which would cost him the life of his dear yak.
