These movies incorporate a very interesting technique in its storytelling in order to tell the story of the life of one of its characters. The other characters in the movie are literally immersed into the lives of the characters giving a feeling that they were actually there, which in turn immerses the audience in their lives as well. Both movies are definitely very interesting to watch!

Similarity is not so much the story itself, but how it tells the story in terms of how characters appear to each other, imagine themselves directly in memories and present events that should not be happening as if they were happening.
Co-written by frequent Kon collaborator Mashashi Ando, maybe just a coincidence that the two locations (Sapporo and Kushiro) featured in the movie are the two places Kon grew up in Hokkaido...
