The slowish yet engrossing pace, and the feel that the series gives off is about the same.
Two melancholic anime, with a mostly calm setting but with psychological/supernatural aspects, a mystery that surrounds the town the people live at, mysterious dreams, crows, and people wishing to fly either metaphorically or literally. Both also present the topics of loss.
The biggest difference is that AIR has some Harem/Romance elements and Haibane Renmei is mostly a Slice of Life.
Their stories - whilst mostly different - parallel each other through their focus on people with wings. They also explore existentialist concepts and can get quite emotional at times.
