By "otaku" we generally mean the Japanese market, the fans that buy the stuff and their sales matter, unlike ours, because licensed sales are very few and far in between, because they are expensive, when said "premium product" is available on legal licensed streams you pay 10-15$ a month, you just can't attribute the same value to a BD/DVD. Don't get me started on torrents, which is the bread and butter for everyone outside the First World Western countries, me included.
As for the shit taste thread, the border between otaku and weeaboo is smaller than you'd think. Just think of it on this dynamic:
westaboos are the equivalent of weeaboos in japan
while otaku are compared to media geeks in the US
