IT'S REVEALED IN EPISODE 2. That's not just missing braincells, nor memories of the original series. You genuinely just turned your brain off. Rika wakes up in that limbo dimension with Hanyu, and they literally talk about how they were sent back to the original anime's time period, and that now Rika is basically re-living the events of hinamizawa, trying to get out of the loop again. Basically, the events of the original higurashi had already happened, but for some mysterious reason Rika is sent back again, and is desperately trying to get out. Forgive my doubtfulness, but I genuinely don't believe you finished even the first season. Do you even know what happens to Satoko?

If you want to vent your feelings to someone, at least do it on a friend. Here on MAL we're trying to have factual discussions. Subjective threads tend to be full of one-sentence answers.
